Thomas is interested in the evolutionary genetics of model plant species complexes, with a particular focus on how hybridization and polyploidy contribute to the successful establishment of plant species within them. Specifically, he seeks to understand the genomic basis by which hybrid and allopolyploid species not only establish themselves but also develop a greater adaptive capacity than either parent, enabling expansion into novel ecological niches. Thomas believes these insights will help to deepen our understanding of how hybrid species complexes arise and diversify, while also providing valuable genetic knowledge with translational applications.
